Over the next couple of weeks I would like to finish off the 2-star assessments by looking at rescues in the pool. Once you have your nice and shiny 2-star certificate you may wish to consider working towards becoming a level 1 coach. Follow this link for more information
http://www.canoe-england.co.uk/me...Course%20Guide%20V2-1%20May09.pdf
This would be really useful for the club with regard to covering pool sessions and I am sure that we can help with costs. If enough members are interested we can probably book a provider.
Please let me know.

Could I do the course? Not done much paddling this year, so will go with your opinion.

A rough idea of costs:
Calder Canoe Centre (http://www.caldercanoecentre.org.uk/courses.htm) are running UKCC L1 courses & assessments over two weekends next January for £180/head. If, as Carl suggested, we can hire a tame coach then this could come down.
The club has not, generally, funded the cost of courses but current policy has been to subsidise the new 4* "river leader" course by 50% as it is very useful to what we do. Clearly our small club could not stand funding six or eight members, even at 50% so any subsidy of L1 courses would be subject to committee approval and a judgement as to what it would contribute to the club.
Prior to the course you need to register and this costs £55 for non-BCU members and £39 for members (see here: http://www.canoe-england.co.uk/me...ion%20Guidance%20Notes%20V2-2.pdf). This used to cost £17.50. In the past the the club has paid this element. Once you are qualified you will need to maintain your BCU membership to remain a coach and for third party insurance.
Although the BCU only require CRB checks for L2 upwards, the club safeguarding policy (currently in draft) will require all club coaches to be CRB checked; the BCU pay for this. Bridget and I are in the process of sorting this out so if you're thinking of coaching let me know ASAP so you can be included in this process and will get the safeguarding training we will be setting up.
I started coaching as I like to pass on the enjoyment that I get from paddling and to see people progress. In addition, the training & assessment process will sharpen up your skills and keep you up to date. (You may well find out that everything the club has taught you is wrong.) I would recommend anyone who thinks they have something to pass on and wants to give something back to the club to consider coaching.
Cheers

An update on my coaching qualifications.
It would seem that the information I was given when I attended the coaching seminar was not quite correct.
I have just received my confirmation of star awards I can assess which are listed below:
You have now been registered on the BCU database as a BCU Star Award Assessor and you are now able to assess the following:
Paddlesport Start
1 Star
2 Star
3 Star Whitewater
Mr Chairman, Mr Secretary we will have to put our heads together and come up with a cunning plan for future training and assessments. |

Thanks for the update Chris.
For those who are as yet unaware, Graham's injury and consequent sabbatical from paddling has caused him to reluctantly step down as Head Coach, though he remains as Treasurer. I approached Chris, who has kindly agreed to step into the breech, and all other committee members have agreed to this. This is in line with the constitution which allows the committee to co-opt members in such situations.
Although this will need formal ratification at a committee meeting, Chris is now our Head Coach, I wish him well and look forward to a more military style of conduct amongst all our members. I, for one, will be polishing my wetsuit boots before the next parade.
Chris and the rest of the club coaches will get together soon and see how we can knock some discipline into you lot - you 'orrible shower of ..........

Following a rainy Sunday in Clitheroe, I am now a fully fledged old-school Level 2 kayak coach, hence I can now look after small groups on sheltered waters (?). When Carl has finished his two-star programme then I will be able to assess up to two-star myself, probably.
This means you have to stop taking the Mickey and start to show me the same level of respect that you do for Carl.
