Hi Lee
I wouldn't ever recommend that you paddle rivers alone (I admit to having done so myself, but only low grade rivers which I know really well, and I like to pretend that I know what I'm doing), but as you know there are canals around (you're supposed to have a licence, but I don't know if anyone ever gets challenged).
Best thing to do is to get invoved with a club, and paddle in company. We won't bite.
