Wednesday 10th Spetember

This post may be a little too late for most people, however, came home via Rawtenstall today (Tuesday) and noted that the Irwell was up again, although not as much as last week.  More rain in the next 12 hours will make a big difference.  I guess what I am trying to say is that since it will be dark by 8pm and the potential of big water again, tomorrow night's meeting is probably not suitable for total beginners or novices.  Steve unless I hear otherwise (phone or email me, I can't access this site at work) I won't bring the Redline for this reason.

I agree with Carl's view above.

There is supposed to be some more rain today. Not much, but probably enough to stop the river falling and I guess that it will still be pretty high tonight.

We really don't want to get into the situation of turning folk away, or worse, chasing swimmers and gear down a swollen river in the dark. Any queries, post here - I'll check back later and do my best to answer.

Thanks for that Carl - I'll give it a miss tonight based on that (as I still class myself as a novice)....I'm stuck at work at the moment anyway so may have been running late anyway.

You'd probably been okay Jon, but as predicted the river was fairly high and no place for absolute beginners (of which you are not).  A number of us either swam, had to brace or roll (I did all three), the swim being self inflicted when I tried to roll at the bottom of the road bridge (ended up crashing into the Island upside down).
