Washburn release (15/11/09)There are a few more releases of the Washburn over the next couple of months as follows:
Sunday 4th. Oct.
Sunday 18th. Oct
Sunday 15th. Nov.
If anyone wants to do one of these please post here.
This forum contains much discussion about the Washburn, but for those who don't know it, it is a fast flowing river with several drops. If you swim it is likely that you will do so for some distance as rescue is difficult.
This river is suitable for any paddler who has experienced recent club trips to the Tryweryn or perhaps spent the summer paddling on the Burrs. Ask if you are not sure!
Any takers?

Hi Carl,
I can only do the 15th November. I haven't done the Trywern or much paddling over the summer tho...

What time are people thinking of setting off? I'm at a birthday party the night before..... so am hoping it's not too much of an early start!

I'm taking Darren's trailer next week, and can fit 7 in the car - please post here if you want a lift.
|
Steve T

Lift would be good thanks.
If there's more than seven (there might well be) then I'll drive instead.

Suggest we meet at 11am at the layby where the cafe and toilets are where Phil abused Chris*
Carl
* this doesn't really sound right does it? The full story is on this discussion. http://westhoughtoncanoeclub.myfreeforum.org/ftopic321-0-0-asc-.php
If you want directions please ask on Wednesday. I will publish the full list of who we think are going on Thursday.

11:00 arrive layby
11:00 - 11:05 abuse Chris (optional)
11:05 - 11:15 buy/eat bacon buttie & brew
11:15 - 11:30 talk b*****s
11:30 - 11:45 drive to river
11:45 - 12:00 look at river
12:00 - 12:15 get changed
12:15 - 12:30 sort shuttle
12:30 start paddling
(an additional thirty minutes of faffing about is available to use as required throughout the day)
16:00 sunset
Does an earlier start give anyone a problem? (it's roughly a 90-minute drive)

Hi Steve
Thats fine any time is ok for me
|
Mel Stoddart
|
Wouldn't want to get there any earlier than 10 if that's OK with everyone else....
|
Steve T
|
10:00 sounds reasonable, guess that's an 8:30 start.
Early start + less faff = more paddling
Something Carl and I have to consider, although not so important on the Washburn, is that an early start also means an early finish. That means less chance of having to sort out any epic adventures in the dark.
Maybe the 1˝ hour layby-to-water delay time is slightly pessimistic, but I'd be surprised if we do it in less than an hour.
Dave - hope you're back out soon when life's settled down.

Sounds good to me. I'll bring Mel as we're practically on the M66 and meet the rest of you at the lay-by at a designated time.
Will be down tomorrow night so can finalise then.
Looking forward to it

Possible problem:
The Washburn information line (0845 833 8654) is suggesting that there might be a problem with this weekend’s release. They advise that anyone planning to go on Sunday should ring back on Thursday or Friday to confirm if it is going ahead.
Obviously we will do this, but will need a backup plan. Rammy run is one option, JJ’s is another, we’ll discuss on Wednesday.
Watch this space.

If we do the rammy run and start at 10 I get a better lie in! Just in case I need it

Hi steve
Just name the place and i will be there
|
Steve T

Washburn line updated today - the release is now likely to go ahead so we're on as originally planned.
Steve.

Excellent (I think....)
|
Jon W

Nice one.
Remind me where the lay-by/meeting place is (just off the A59 I'm guessing)? See you all there at 10?

This trip has been designated as an official club event.
That means the club's third party insurance applies, which MIGHT/SHOULD mean that non-BCU members don't need to pay the extra Ł2 for insurance, so long as you have your club membership card.
We'll have to clarify that on the day with whoever is on the gate. I will have the club's BCU affiliation card with me.

Chris
On Wednesday I think the "plan" was:
In Graham's paddlebus:
Graham
Me
Darren
Chris
Matt
Making their own way:
Mel & Jon
Carl
Lisa
We are also expecting prospective member Pete Williams, who will be meeting us at the car park. (Pete if you're reading this then you might want to meet us at the layby - if you email me or PM through this forum I'll send you my mobile number)
Jon
I wasn't there at the time of the Phil/Chris/portaloo incident so don't know the layby. Perhaps someone else could enlighten you?
Steve
|
CarlS

The layby where the portaloo is/was in on the left hand side as you are driving east on the A59 near Blubberhouses.
