Hi Bob

In the first instance I would say try as many boats as you can to see what suits you.  If you're not a member of a club I would strongly suggest you join one, you will be able to try out their boats, and those of their members to get a feel for what is available, and paddling is much more fun in a group and you will learn much faster. Obviously you would be welcome with us and if you wanted to come along then get in touch, although there may be more local clubs to you. Using club boats lets you sort out your personal clothing, safety gear and a paddle while you decide what boat you want.

Typical beginners' boats which our club has bought recently include the Pyranha Inazone, Perception Sonic (you would need the Super Sonic at 95kg), and the Perception Arc, we have paid between £200 - £250 for these. Other good all-purpose boats are the Dagger Redline and if you wanted something newer then maybe a Pyranha Stretch or Ammo. Be wary of buying something too "old school" as it won't be as good as something newer, but without knowing it is easy to buy something outdated and over-priced on ebay.

I would also recommend buying second hand, no-one really needs the latest models and plastic boats are all but indestructible. Doing this means that if you don't get on with your boat you can sell it for what you paid for it and buy another. However, don't skimp on a paddle as at the cheap end they can be heavy, clumsy things which will spoil your enjoyment.

Good luck and happy paddling. Feel free to get in touch if you want any more information or to come paddling with us.

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Bob.

Just wantet to say I work shifts with rotations onto nights too so I rarely get to go out with the club - but the company is great, the instruction is too and nobody minds if you only turn up one in a blue moon - you still get a warm welcome, so don't let that put you off.

once i get a kayak i shall try to get out with the club.

Good to see you're still lurking around here. Thanks for the kind words and hope to see you back on the water soon.

Rob
We do have members from over in your direction, although it is a bit of  distance from our regular mid-week haunt in Bury. Keep in touch and you'd be welcome to join in, with or without your own boat.
