Try for the Rothy again Saturay 10th January 09Does anyone want to try to do the Rothay (if the rain gods give us enough water) on Saturday 10th Jan 09.This is not a river for total beginners on moving water, you will need some experience i.e. having been on Burrs at a medium level of water at least. We will do from Grasmere Lake to Waterhead in Windermere. This is mainly grade 2 with one bit of grade 3 which can be portaged by walking along the road. It has a few small weirs and some long stretches of rapids with plenty of rocks, being a narrow river it can be interesting on these parts. It is 7km/about 4 miles long but we can take our time playing in it whatever you want to do. If it works out with the water we will need to use as least cars as possible as where we get in there is only a small layby. As with other moving water trips there is a few members who are qualified to lead, I am not so if you come along it's your responsibility.Obviously we will take good care of you and the club has a good safety record.

10th is possible although I'm booked onto 4-star training on the 11th so it will depend on what else is planned for that weekend. However, since I missed today's trip and will be in Portsmouth again for three weeks in February I will try to make this one.
Parking might be less of an issue if we launch on Grasmere from the boat hire place mentioned here: http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/nwengland/rothay.htm
Note that there is one rapid where playing is not appreciated as the river runs through someone's garden.

Looking at the weather forecast it is unlikely there will be enough water in the Rothay. After the recent dry weather it would have to rain most of the week. I'll update you on the forum by Wednesday. If it does not work out again this time, we'll just have to decide one week when the water level is ok to sort it for that weekend.

As an alternative we could go to Halton Rapids, the access finishes at the end of January and since low water is fairly certain, this stretch of river would be a good place for some of our less experienced or rusty paddlers to have a go outdoors.

Halton Rapids is a good idea, should probably be OK for that.
I have something to do in the morning so might only come along in the afternoon. I'll know for sure by Wednesday night.

Can't make it this Wednesday, but should be okay for Saturday. Given that Halton Rapids is now looking likely what time do people want to meet up?

OK, I've got too much real-world stuff to sort out and I'm on the course Sunday so I'll have to dip out of this one.
Have fun,

Try the Rothay againChecked water level of Rothay and as espected it is too low.Christmas is over and everything breaks down beyond repair being too old so I am afraid it's shopping for me on Saturday, dishwasher(do not like washing up for 11 kid and us), fridge/freezer. Then on Sunday there is more laborious tasks/jobs to do. Have fun might see you next week at the pool.

I'm guessing due to the low numbers (Carl and I) that the trip is probably off? I'm still up for it if we have the numbers. Alternatively I'll get some walking in to get my fresh air fix for the weekend!

Two is possible on somewhere we know well like the Burrs but water levels will be low, so suggest we wait for some rain and try for another weekend.
