Safeguarding / Child Protection Workshop 17/11/09BCU / CE policy requires that anyone who coaches children on a regular basis (whether qualified as a coach or not) must attend a 3-hour safeguarding workshop. This can be delivered by Sportscoach UK, at a cost of £35 each, or an equivalent course is permissible so long as it covers the same syllabus. The club is fortunate in that our Welfare Officer (my better half) is professionally qualified to deliver an equivalent workshop and we have arranged for this to be held on the evening of Tuesday, 17 November. This date has been fixed to allow all the club’s current coaches to attend (although I admit I haven’t yet spoken to Graham B).
Because we can do this for £0.00, this is also a chance for anyone who has expressed an interest in coaching at Level 1, or anyone who coaches during club events on an informal basis, to attend.
Also, as discussed at the AGM, good practice would suggest that ideally the Welfare Officer would be an active club member and we would be looking for someone to take over this role when Bridget has sorted the policy and got the system and training in place. Hence, if you are even slightly curious about taking on this role it would be good to attend this workshop, which is a pre-requisite for the BCU Time to Listen workshops that Welfare Officers need to attend.
It looks like being quite an interesting session which will certainly stimulate some discussion and may challenge the way you think and act. Already the mutterings coming out of our office at home suggest that some of the current BCU advice is at odds with current best practice, so we might be flagging that back up to them.
The venue will be a meeting room at Paul’s church in Worsley, exact kick off time TBC but probably 6:30-ish as it will take 3 hours. If you would like to attend, please let me know ASAP.

If choccie biscuits are provided count me in

That might put the cost of the course up from £0.00 to ½ packet of biscuits per person. The club cannot stand this level of expenditure so we would expect a contribution from the attendee. I happen to know that Jaffa cakes go down well.

I've no preference on the edibles - there's no such thing as a bad biscuit.

This is confirmed for Tuesday, 17/11/09, 18:30 at Worsley Road URC, M27 0AG.

Paul's asked us to go in through the main Church doors; when you get there ask for Paul's scout group meeting - mention of canoe clubs might cause confusion.
Cheers
