Rothay 22 NovemberAs I can not do the second weekend of November (away on the Tyne Tour) I am interested in doing the Rothay on Saturday 22 November. Is anyone interested in this as a second trip? We will do from Grasmere Lake to Waterhead on Windermere. This is mainly a grade 2 with one bit of grade 3 which can be portaged by walking along the road. It has a few small weirs and some long stretches of rapids with plenty of rocks; being a narrow river it can be a challenge on these parts. It is 7km / about 4 miles long but we can take our time playing on it, whatever you want to do. This trip is “water level permitting”: so far we have done it in flood (not easy!) and walked most of it with not enough water.

Yes, I would like to do this river at a 'sensible' level!

I'm also interested in this trip - will this be in addition to the 2nd weekend trip?
Cheers

RothayGraham, it is an addition to the trip on the second weekend. As long as water levels are not in spate like on the Greta yesterday it would be okay for you.

Another trip I'll have to miss out on, get back off holiday late on the Sat night. I'm sure I'll make it out one day!

Thanks Allen, I'll go with your judgement whether I'd be able to do it or not!

Given that Mel can't make the Saturday is there any chance of doing the Sunday instead? My wife is away for the day on the Saturday as well and this may make it a little difficult given child looking after type stuff.

ROTHAYWe can make it the Sunday if this suits members best. I have asked Dave S and it is ok for him,Paul Gray was interested but could not do the Saturday so Sunday will be best. We shall have to make an earlyish start as now it is dark sooner, and we need to be back not too late so we can sort out for Monday with the minded kids (Pain working for your self)

RothayI will contact a former member of Westhougton cc who lives close to the Rothay and or the access officer to see what the water levels are like for Sunday, hopefully by Wednesday. Looking at the weather last week it might be ok, lot of rain not as much now so it could drop to a nice level for all but I will check. We need to sort lifts etc on Wednesday, if not at baths watch this space.Members interested are -Me,Anneke,Dave S, Jon S, Carl, Cris John W, Graham S, and poss Paul M.I think this is about the limit on a river like this given the width and trees. I do not want to stop any one going but the safety element has to come into it.Graham once I find river levels out I can say if it suitable for you. I will put on here or see you at the pool.

rothayHaving spoken to the access officer for the Rothay he has told me it is very low and the forcast is for little rain before Sunday. So it was decided to go on the Mersey instead at the pool last night. We will go from Ford Street in Stockport to Jacksons Boat near Sale W/P. Up till now Sale W/P is still closed with blue and green algea. They told me it may possibly be open on Sunday. This is about 8 miles from Stockport; meet 9.30 am at Sale w/p main car park to sort out car shuttle. The river is grade 1/2 with 3 weirs and several easy rapids (unless you are doing it in an open canoe as me and Dave S are and we have never done moving water in an open). Can you post here if you are coming please so we know who should turn up.

You'll be fine! It is just a little harder to roll and don't even think about trying to do a stern dip
Sorry Allen, can't make it (daughter's birthday party).

I'll be along too. Am hoping the water's as warm as the red sea last week. 26 degrees
What time are you planning on finishing? Or, to put it another way do I need to bring some food along?

Allen

Mel,
Best to bring some food as with doing the shuttle we won't set off till 10.30-11am so we'll be on the water till between 2 and 3pm.
Focus on staying in your boat as it will definitely be cold! Bring coffee, not icecream!
