River Ure 27/06/09 (Club weekend)Carl suggested in another thread that we paddle the River Ure in North Yorkshire on Saturday, 27 June, which is one of the days permitted by the anglers' access restrictions. Since the run finishes at a campsite, it's been suggested that we make a weekend of this. The rapids by the campsite can be paddled at any time, and there are stretches of easier rapids and flat water below them so it's an ideal place to play for all levels of paddler.
Saturday's Ure trip will be reasonably easy, but has rapids at the start and finish which can easily be grade III. Therefore, although it's not for complete beginners, anyone who regularly gets out on Wednesdays between now and then should be OK and it should be a good target to aim for. There's a couple of write-ups from previous trips on the website's reports page, and some headcam video on Carl's "Cowheaders" YouTube channel.
Has anyone any ideas or preferences as to what to do on the Sunday? Given that Saturday’s trip is not suitable for all, perhaps we should look at a flatwater tour somewhere to allow all the club to join in. Alternatively we could hang round the campsite and play on the rapids there.
This would allow anyone who doesn’t want to paddle the Ure to use Saturday to travel and pitch, join in the evening socialising and enjoy something more leisurely on the Sunday before heading home. Of course they could also come on Friday anyway and find something else to do on Saturday.
The campsite's website is http://www.sleningfordwatermill.co.uk/index.html
I don't think I'll be able to camp on the Friday night. I'll probably travel across early morning for the Ure trip, stay Saturday night and do whatever we're doing Sunday, so if anyone else wants to do that, there'll be a lift available.

Should be a good weekend!
Steve, I'll also only be stopping the Saturday, so I'll take you up on the offer of a lift if you don't mind!
Thanks

Count me in for camping as well. May check out the weather and then decide whether to camp Fri night as well.
Fingers crossed we get the same conditions as last time

River UREIs there any problem if I bring my 3 kids (11,15,17yrs old) along for the weekend. I will probably stay Friday night and saturday night. and would it be possible to do a flat water on sunday that they could have a go at to try and get them involved.
Cheers

Hi Dave
Good idea, the more the merrier - it would be good if we could do something for all levels on the Sunday. There are some ideas on the internet but it's not an area we've been to much so if anyone else knows of anything please shout.
We'll have a chat Wednesday. It would be good if you could bring your kids on a Burrs session nearer the time if they haven't paddled before.

Put me down for 4 people then, and I will bring the kids one at a time to a couple of bigginers classes first on Burrs when it gets a bit lighter.

OK...I'm happy to book this but I need confirmation of numbers etc.
As I understand it those interested are:
Me (camping Fri and Sat night)
Mel (ditto)
Lisa and Phil (ditto)
Dave + 3? (ditto)
Carl (ditto?)
Graham S (staying Sat night only)
Steve (not staying over)
If I've missed anyone out let me know. I've contacted the campsite for availability with a rough idea of numbers. Check out the website for details (see earlier post).

Thanks for taking this on Jon.
The real world has got in the way, so as you've said, I can only go for the day. I'll travel over early Saturday for the Ure trip and then back Saturday evening.
Graham, I can still give you a lift there if you can cadge one back from someone else on Sunday. Also if anyone else wants to go just for the day there's plenty of space.

Guys - had a reply from the Mill. They're nearly fully booked and have sent the following reply:
We have availability and have 'pencilled you in' for 6 Non Electric pitches. We need a booking form submitted for each tent please via www.sleningfordwatermill.co.uk and can you tell them it is very important to use 'additional information' to tell me they are party of the Westhoughton CC as we are nearly fully booked and if we don't know they are with you may be refused a pitch. Paddling is free if you are camping with us, day visitors need to report to reception and a fee of £3.50 per paddler and £1.00 for non paddlers.
Many Regards and see you in June

Guys - had a phonecall from Slennigford Mill.
I've reserved 6 places but only three have been booked and paid for. They're getting requests from other people and are turning them away.
If you don't book your place via the website in the next few days they will be taken away from us.
Please can you book asap and post on here when you've done so., remembering to quote the club on the form
Otherwise you'll be disappointed.
Cheers

We will do the river sometime on the Saturday and for the rest of the weekend we can spend time on various parts of the campsite section. Some members have taken a swim on Hack Falls and have arrived in the eddy at the bottom none the worse for wear, Hack Falls and all the other features can be portaged if required.
The second weir will be portaged unless we feel it is safe to take it on the far right as suggested.

Had a quick look at the weather for the weekend and it's meant to be sunny and 22 degrees

Clearly you have learnt nothing during your time with us . What's more important is how much rainfall they're going to get over there on Thursday & Friday - not much, unfortunately (although not everyone will agree with that).
I now have two daytrippers travelling over with me: Teresa & Adrian, plus possibly Graham B's boat since he might be going over as well independently. Looks like Saturday will be a well-attended trip.
See you all there. I'm sure that Friday night at the campsite will be a sober and sensible affair and we'll find you all lively and raring to go on Saturday .

Carl,
What time are you looking at getting going on Saturday?
I was looking to leave at about 8:00 ish, so we'll be there at about 10:00. I seem to remember the shuttle taking a long time to set up last time.
I understand that Graham's boat is now making it's own way there so there's space for one more if anyone wants to go over just for the Saturday.

A bit of rain today or tomorrow would have been good. Most of my pre thought swim excuses involved there being a lot more water this time!
We'll take your advice Steve and make sure that Friday we're all lively and raring to go and Sat we'll be sober and sensible....
