IRONMAN!

No, I don't think they're after entrants!

I have just received this email, fairly self-explanatory I think. If anyone is keen then post here in the first instance and if someone wants to co-ordinate a group from the club then shout.

Dear Steven (Thomas!!)

I have been provided with your name and club website by another local Sea Kayaker who has very kindly volunteered his services as a support kayaker for our forthcoming IRONMAN UK triathlon event being held on Sunday 2nd August 2009 at Rivington Resevoir.

Our event has previously been held in Dorset and has always had water cover supplied by the regional BCU canoeists. We have contacted various local BCU clubs asking them if they are able to become involved with our newly re-located event but sadly the response has been very limited!

However a local sea kayaker (who is also a 7 times IRONMAN finisher himself I seem to remember!) has volunteered himself and several of his friends. He has also suggested that I contact your self and your club to see if more volunteers can be drummed up.

Ideally we require 30- 40 kayakers/canoeists. The main tasks will be on race morning to initially hold back the competitors in the water, keep the Pros seperated from the age groupers, then allow the competitors to start the swim course once the gun has gone off. There will be 1500 competitors swimming a lapped 2.4 mile course. All of them will be in triathlon specific wetsuits. The kaykers/canoeists will then be required to ensure full water safety of these competitors, to aid any competitor that gets into any difficulties and to ensure none of them start swimming in any bizare directions!

At our previous events our BCU team have also provided their own ribs for water safety and/or media craft. These ribs have also worked with our Swim Captain on the Thursday afternoon to mark out, set up and fully measure (and measure again!!) the swim course using our own IRONMAN UK bouys etc. We are wondering if this is something that you and your club would have available as well.

We are a registered Not For Profit organisation and so our budgets are very tight and limited - however we do have funds set aside for this area that could certainly be an excellent fundraising few hours for you and your club members! In the past local clubs that have been involved in similar ways have certainly boosted their club funds. Beats raffles and cake sales any day!

I very much look forward to hearing from you - or anyone that you feel would be able to help. I am also aware that time is ticking away and as our BCU communications did not acheive the outcome we had hoped for, we do need to work on this and get it sorted somewhat promptly if this is of interest to you and your club.

I hope to hear from you very soon - by the way my Partner and another member of my team are actually in Bolton for tomorrow and Thursday if this is of interest and you would like a really quick site visit or meeting with them to see what is involved etc. Just a thought!

Kind regards,

Alison Boon - Race Owner
