IMPORTANT - Wednesday nights 17th & 24th SeptemberLast night (10th) we had a reasonable level at Burrs, and as the sun set at about 7:30 we had lost any useful light by 8:00. Combining these factors means that Carl’s suggestion to beginners to give last night a miss was wise. The last thing anybody wants is for a minor swim to turn into an epic in the dark. Simple things like recovering paddles become far more difficult than they need to be (why are paddle shafts all black?).
We are losing light quickly (in two weeks time, sunset will be at 7:00) and following a chat between the club coaches who were present last night we are respectfully suggesting that novice paddlers don’t paddle at the remaining Wednesday evening outdoor meets (17th and 24th September). Please take this advice in the manner in which it is intended, it is purely for safety reasons and we do not want to discourage anyone. Although we run the club fairly informally, as coaches/trainee coaches we still have responsibility for managing the sessions in a safe manner and taking novices onto a fast river 30 minutes before sunset is not responsible. You can always turn up at Burrs to watch, encourage and heckle, of course, and a pint in the Brown Cow tastes nearly as good when you haven’t been paddling.
The first indoor pool session is likely to be on 1st October, this is the ideal place to practice in a warm and consequence-free environment, and Graham has arranged an earlier and more convenient time slot than in previous years.
This does not mean that you can use this as an excuse to retire to the pool until April . Kayaking is not an indoor sport and as mentioned elsewhere we are planning to organise a few flat-water trips at weekends through Autumn and Winter to give everyone a chance to get outside. The first of these will probably be towards the end of this month, on the River Weaver. If you are interested get in touch with myself and/or Carl with a few dates that you can make and we’ll arrange something.
Combining the pool sessions with one or two outdoor paddles will bring on even a complete beginner to the stage where they can enjoy next year’s Burrs paddles and our regular moving water weekend trips. We might even have a summer next year.

Of course we do run the odd saturday/sunday morning trip to the Burrs in winter, these are usually organised on the weds night and often not formal club meets.

I've sent a general email out on this, and added a note on the website's home page and calendar.

Nothing to add, I'm just bumping this thread back up to the top so it's more obvious as a reminder for tomorrow.
Don't have too much fun without me.
