Chester, 25/06/08Last night Carl, Becky, Teresa, Jason, Graham S, Chris & myself went over to Chester to play on the weir. Meeting at the usual place on Sandy Lane we debated whether to drive down to the bandstand to save the long, flatwater slog there and back, but decided that as it was a nice evening it would probably be pretty busy so we paddled down. When we got there, there didn’t seem to be much space so probably this was a good decision. However, there was a brisk wind in our face on the way downstream.
The water was lower than our last trip there, and there was another large club group getting on just ahead of us, and more paddlers already at the weir, so it was busy and the amount of coaching that could be done on the bottom chute was limited.
For those who wanted to play, however, all the steps were in a good condition for pop-outs, and later I’ll post some pictures and video of Carl, Jason & myself getting the boats somewhere approaching vertical. The last step can produce a nice surfing wave in the right conditions (I think the tide needs to be high), but last night this was just another steep pour-over.
After the paddle back four of us went for a pint in a pub with a balcony overlooking the river to finish off another nice evening.
