Burrs Wednesday 3rd September 2008

The river was fairly high tonight and most of us decided not to go anyway near the weir.  Andy and Andy went down the steps making it look easy.  Their descent is on Utube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX-TlDniYXQ
please ignore any background swearing that may have been picked up.  A good night and excellent preparation for the Tryweryn.

Last night was the highest I have seen Burrs. For a section of river which we all know very well, it was like somewhere completely different. It was easily as fast as the Washburn, but being much wider was more powerful (and possibly poo-full)

The water was fast, powerful and there were very few breakouts, those that were there were boily and/or recirculating. The rapids were big, with some large waves and strong currents and the water looked like gravy. All the sections of rocks were completely covered, and lots of the tree branches were reaching the water. There was lots of debris in the river, including beer kegs, tree branches and a spare tyre (with wheel!)

The Shufflers were out, playing on everything along with the Andys, but the rest of us know our place and stuck to surfing some of the smaller (?) waves.

A really good night, but definitely not suitable for beginners, two of whom got off before we really got going, and that was the right decision. Graham S paddled most of the length, and did well - he did comment that the rest of us didn't seem to be smiling much. I would claim that's because we were concentrating. Usually we can drift down 99% of Burrs backwards or sideways while joking and chatting away; last night was full on and there was no point where you could relax - it certainly blew away a few cobwebs.

I also have some video of the weir descent, I'll post it on YouTube when I've found some suitably corny music.
