Burrs 24/01/09Well, what can I say? Yesterday at Burrs all our newcomers had good, fairly dry days with a small number of wet exits despite a good flow, and even our traditional swim team captain stayed in the boat. I therefore thought it would be a good idea to demonstrate some swimming technique.
In the real world, what happened was:
Unfortunately following one capsize and swim just below the road bridge, I was trying to recover the paddler's boat when I got myself a bit mixed up with the trees on the river left bank. I'm guessing that one of my end loops was caught on a branch as no amount of paddling or support strokes could stop a long, slow and inevitable capsize. There was no rolling up from it either despite a few attempts so I had to hit the eject button. When I came up, my boat was in exactly the same place so something was holding it. Anyway my boat then shot off downstream, so I swam down a few yards, climbed up the bank, recovered the original boat from its wedged position and paddled that down to the end, where everyone else was assembled to watch me arrive.
A great start to 2009! (But I now know my helmet camera is waterproof - unfortunately the memory ran out about two minutes earlier!)

Although not as spectacular as your capsize Steve (I really did think you did it intentionally at first) I am hereby claiming the prize for the first swim of the day - I set the trend for others to follow!

Perhaps I should have stuck with that story then?
You've just reminded me that I have missed someone (you) off the list of paddlers in the report section. Now fixed, with my apologies.

my first swim BurrsHi all i thought id better come on and own up to my first and certainly not my last swim on saturday
I thought id got away with it, untill right at the end under the road bridge i went over and swam, i dont know what i did wrong but my boat didnt save me this time, like it did on about 3 different occasions further up the river.
Anyway ive got my first kayaking bruise now aswell during my swim after hitting my hip on a rock when Chris took me down the weir holding the back of his boat to get me to the side.
Also id like to say sorry to steve cos you would have stayed dry if it wasnt for me, at least you know your cameras waterproof now.

My swim was entirely my own stupid fault for not paying attention to where I was.
Now you've got your first swim out of the way you know waht to expect and that's one less thing to worry about.
