Burrs 11/06/08

This week's trip redefined low - the Irwell seems to be lower each time we go and as last week was a scrape we didn't even head up to the top end this time. Getting in near the squirt spot, we paddled up to the broken weir, carried over this and paddled up as far as was sensible, before running back down to the usual get-out. There was not a lot to play on, but we did our best. And I still can't cartwheel.

It was a bit cooler than last week, and this may have had an effect on the numbers, although eight is still not a bad turn out, including one newcomer, Julie (a friend of Teresa's).

With five of the seven committee members present, we finished off with an impromptu committee meeting over a pint in the Brown Cow. Minutes from this will be distributed to all members once the notes from my hazy memory have been corrected by everyone else.

Next week is back at Burrs for more punishment, but then on alternate weeks we'll be somewhere else so hopefully Chester or the Mersey will provide a bit more entertainment. If the summer continues like this then we'll be glad of our weekend trips.

The level was the lowest I've ever seen it, but Graham B and Chris seemed to enjoy themselves shifting rocks around. Some of us tried sliding down the weir on river left at the get out, this involved walking up and then trying to get in your kayak without letting it slide away, great fun!

In talking about river trips we did discuss informal arrangements as well.  We do run an offical trip on the second weekend of every month but there is nothing to stop us doing extra runs as well.  Best policy is to keep an eye on the weather, if it rains then look on the forum.  I still want to do the Serpent's Tail and will probably be looking to go one Saturday or Sunday morning.
