Beginners trip (yes, again!). Any interest for 24/01/09?

We have tried and failed a couple of times to organise a trip for the many beginners who have been attending pool sessions this winter.

Since I’m away again in February, the only day which I can fit in before March will be Saturday, 24 January, so if there is any interest I propose this as a beginners’ outing. (Not just for beginners, the more the merrier of course, work off that Christmas excess!)

Depending on who turns up then I suggest Burrs if it’s not stupidly high or stupidly low, perhaps spending some time on the pool (if available) or above the weir before running the river stretch proper. If the water level isn’t ideal we could look at a flat water trip elsewhere but the showers, changing rooms and bacon butties at Burrs are a draw for first timers (and the rest of us).

Those who hang around here post below, if it looks like a goer then I’ll canvass some interest at the pool on Wednesday.

Ask us for advice, but this is copied from the last time we attempted to organise a trip:
Quote:
Bear in mind the time of year so speak to us about what to wear as there is a good chance you’ll get wet. We can supply splash/wind-proof cags, buoyancy aids and helmets as well as boats, paddles and spraydecks. We have a few wetsuits but these are mostly small sizes. We would always encourage novices to invest in their personal kit first and if you intend to keep up paddling then a long-john type wetsuit can be had fairly cheaply (~£35 ish) and is probably the best early investment you can make at this stage (ask last year’s crop of beginners). See sites like wetsuit outlet (www.wetsuitoutlet.co.uk) or Lomo (www.ewetsuits.com). Ebay usually has a few on and Decathlon in Stockport also has wetsuits.

I confess to a bit of self-interest here as my brother has said he wants to try paddling, and I want to get him in a boat before he changes his mind as revenge for the big hills he dragged me up mountain biking. Hopefully he’ll be at the pool next week.

Should be OK for that date whatever the plan.

I am up for that and I will see if I can drag Sue along as well.

Lots of interest in this last night, so it will go ahead on the 24th. Full details to follow, final arrangements will be made next Wednesday so if you won't be at the pool check here or get in touch.

I have ‘phoned Burrs and we are OK to use the training pool but they are now running courses on Saturdays so we might have to share it. I forgot to ask what time the courses start but their website suggests 10:30.

So we can either get there for a 10:00 on-the-water start and (probably) have the pool to ourselves for half an hour; or have a slightly longer lie-in and go for a 10:30 kick-off but only have half the pool. Any preference? I’m guessing we’ll have a total of 8 -10 out so half the pool might be a bit crowded. Once we’ve sorted that I’ll type up a note with the basic details on and send out a general email.

They are sending the new changing room keys out next week so someone please remind me to get one from Graham before Saturday.

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum.  We will decide a time on Wednesday, but we usually meet at the Burrs around 10.30 ish.  Looks like it will be a good turn out.

Thank you Carl

No problem.  Looking forward to it.

I'll be ok for this one (and any more that are coming up!)

Thanks

Looking like this will be a popular day out.

I've sent out a general email to the club so there might be even more. If that's the case then we'll probably have to split the group, the likes of Graham and Jon going straight onto the river if we're sharing the pool.

We'll make it up on the day anyway.

Most of the usual questions have been answered here:

I have had a look at the long term weather report and it may be snowing on Saturday!
Steve T

I've just looked at Metcheck and yes, Saturday doesn't look like much fun weather-wise. Temp. approx. 4°C with windchill making it feel like -1°C. However, the river is fairly sheltered so the wind shouldn't be a big deal.

Make sure you're all well insulated with thermals. I know that's easy for those of us who have all the gear to say, so please ask us if you're not sure what to wear. The best thing about Burrs is that we're never more than ten minutes walk from the cars, hot showers and a brew.

I'm more interested in the rain preceding Saturday and while it is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday nights, it runs off quickly and Friday looks dry so we should have no problems.

If it does snow we can have the same type of fun as in this video!

ps does anyone understand German?

Hi everyone,
I can actually make this one! See you all on Saturday
Steve T

OK:
Meet at 10:30 Saturday morning, plan to inspect the river, get changed and be on the water by 11:00. You never know, it could actually happen. Lets try to make it snappy and save the faff and gossip for the brew & bacon butties in the cafe afterwards.

What we actually do on the water will depend on who/how many show up and the state of the river, so we'll play it by ear on the day.

I will take a boat, paddle etc. for Martin - anyone else who needs a kayak has missed the (...err...) boat. Both Carl and I will have a general collection of club gear to make sure everyone else is kitted out appropriately.

Apologies if tonight at the pool was a bit hectic and you didn't get a chance to ask any questions about gear or anything else. Please feel free to post here or email with any queries.

See you Saturday,
Steve

One more thing -

Anyone who reads the trip reports on the website will know that in the main they are written by me. For this trip, it would be good if one or two of our newer members could write something which I could put onto the site. This would give a slightly different slant.

Bear this in mind tomorrow, and if you could string a few words together afterwards then either email them to me or post something on the reports section of the forum and I'll paste them together. It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve
