August Bank Holiday - Sleningford WatermillHi Guy/Girls
Just to let you know myself, Phil and our children will be going up to Sleningford Watermill on 28/8/08 to either 30/8/09 or 31/8/09. We may also be bringing some of our family.
We are going up there for a little holiday and if any of you would like to join us then it would be great. That means we would be able to paddle with you.
It happens to be my birthday on 29/8/09. (dont forget the pressies LOL, however you can dunk me in the river if you would like, NICE)!!!!
Phil mentioned that a few of you could be intrested.
Im going to book us ASAP and if i can get a group of us i would like to try and have us in one place again.
Im really looking forward to this as we have now bought a new tent and the accessories.
Thanks to you guys you have got me not only interested in Kayaking but also into camping.

There are a few camp sites in the Lake District which are right by the lakeside so ideal for paddling - there's one on Coniston and I think two on Ullswater, probably plenty of others. I'll do some digging and let you know, but you might have the same problem with lots of places being booked now for the Bank Holiday.

August Bank Holiday campingLisa,
There is a very nice national trust campsite on the shores of Lake Windermere almost opposite Ambleside on the road to Hawkshead at a place called Low Wray.

We recently stayed on a campsite near Windermere for about £10 per night for full family. I'll have a look for the site and give you the details next week if you fancy it.
May be joining you if you don't mind!

That great guys. Thank you for your help.
We will speak to you next week about that campsite.
The more the merrier. It would be great if you could come. Phil said he will teach you how to drink Pink Guiness.

Here are a couple of sites I know about, but have never used, which are by the water:
This one is by Coniston and is a walk from the village:

This one is at the North end of Ullswater and is supposed to be quite good:

I have stayed at the Low Wray site (which Graham has mentioned) 20+ years ago.

It was nice, clean and in a great location, but you can’t book ahead so it’s first come, first served. The website says they will be introducing a booking scheme but as yet it’s not up and running (I rung last week as I am planning to take Amy there for a weekend over the school holidays). This would actually be a great location for a club weekend (clubs can book the group field in advance), maybe we should plan this as a big social for next summer. It would be a great spot to bring along families & friends and muck about on the lake.
There are many more. www.ukcampsite.co.uk is great to search on if you take some of the obviously extreme reviews with a pinch of salt. It all depends on what you want and what you expect from the site. Some have bars, playgrounds & loads of facilities but you pay for that. I prefer the other end; I went away with Conor in May and it cost £8 for two nights for both of us at a site in Derbyshire, but it had the bare minimum of facilities.

Good news Lisa, hope the weather holds out, you should have a great time.
Could you do the club a favour while you're there as I'm trying to look at alternatives in case Low Wray doesn't come up trumps for next year's social camping weekend:
Could you please ask them if they have a separate field for groups or whether they allow large groups (I'm guessing we might have 30+ people in maybe 10+ tents) - they might not as I think it's mainly a family type site.
Also, I have found another site just North of Park Foot called Waterside House camp site, this seems a bit less formal but is also on the lakeshore so might do for the club. If you get a chance could you take a quick look at that as you're paddling past and see what you think? If you don't get a chance that's fine as I might have a day in the Lakes sometime soon and do a bit of scouting around.
