2008 - 2009 winter pool sessionsGraham has now booked Westhoughton Pool for the winter sessions. The first session is likely to be Wednesday 1 October, but this is to be confirmed.
The good news is that the sessions will be a bit earlier, from 20:00 to 21:30. As well as making it handier for the kids it gives everyone else a better chance to get a leisurely pint and/or catch the chip shop before they shut.
Last year we split the 90 minutes into two 45 minute sessions, the first giving priority to novices and kids, the second for anyone, bearing in mind the limit of (I think) ten boats in the pool at once. I think that this worked well, we could get the coaching done in the first bit, play in the second bit and the kids got home earlier. Also, there was less chance of a collision between a wavering novice and a cartwheeling playboater.
Whether this will be the pattern for this year will be confirmed, as will the charges which will be set to cover the pool hire and lifeguard costs.

The above has now been confirmed:
Pool sessions start on Wednesday 1 October, 20:00 - 21:30.
We will split this into two 45 minute sessions, this worked well last year.
We are limited to ten boats in the pool for safety reasons, so in the first session we will give priority to juniors and novices, with the emphasis on coaching.
As previously, we have offered our friends the Irwell Shufflers four places in the second session. We are a small club, and their attendance at the pool sessions helps us to cover costs, even if they do show us up with all their fancy playboating moves.
Charges will be £5.00/session for club members. Non-members will be charged £6.00/session, and we would expect that after coming out to play for two or three sessions, newcomers will have decided whether they like us enough to join. Obviously if you get into a boat for a few minutes to demonstrate something while coaching you won't be charged for that session, but if you paddle for most of the session then you will, since you would be blocking off one of the ten spaces. Common sense will be applied.
Remember that paddling is not an indoor sport and the pool sessions are not an excuse to stay warm all winter. Watch out for the usual monthly white water trips, the odd flat water paddle and ad-hoc weekend Burrs sessions.

To dispel any confusion:
Each Wednesday evening at the pool comprises two "sessions" of 45 minutes each. The charge is £5.00 (or £6.00) for each of these "sessions". If you are in a boat right through from 8:00 to 9:30 that's two sessions so the charge will be £10.00 (or £12.00). If you're coaching, either from the side or stood in the water, there's obviously no charge but if you're coaching from a boat for most of a session then there is.
Sorry if that wasn't clear from the above.
