"Surfing" at Crosby 14/05/08

There was quite a good turn-out at Crosby last night, seven of us meeting at the car park to try our hand at kayak surfing, with Caroline and Amy watching.

While Carl’s scientific study of the tide tables meant that the sea was at least in the right place, the black art of predicting good surf conditions (something to do with high pressures over the Atlantic, offshore winds and whether your shorts are made by O'Neill or Ripcurl) let us down.

The only real waves we had were from the wash of the Isle of Man Sea Cat which gave us a mad few minutes after we got on. After that we were reduced to chasing ripples on an almost completely calm sea. However, it was a fantastic evening, and we were rewarded with a spectacular sunset as we got off. I took a bodyboard as well as my kayak but that stayed in the car along with my Quiksilver hoodie.

The weather had brought a lot of people to the beach so there was quite a contingent of spectators too.

After the last time at Crosby when we had an onshore gale with 3’ -4’ waves, and the time before that when the (flat) sea was ˝ a mile away, we seem destined never to get this trip quite right, though no doubt we’ll keep trying. At some stage we’ll have to arrange a surf trip to North Wales, where the conditions are probably more predictable, and more available on the web.

There must be a reason why none of the surfing websites mention Crosby …………

I've just noticed what Carl wrote last week in another thread:

Quote:
.... it looks like that we should be able to get in the sea without walking halfway to Wales, but I'm not going to promise really big waves.

I'll add these to the club gallery when I get a spare half hour. There's some video as well but Amy's filming stuff faster than I can edit it so that might be a while off.

I'm catching up with some video editing; Amy's film from Crosby is on YouTube under Keawyeds in Kayaks, and here:

Not really sure why it's been cut short right at the end, it should have this picture:

Which is how it should have been ....
