River levels are unpredictable in the summer so the plan for yesterday's Lake District trip was to meet up at the services and make it up from there. Twelve of us turned up at Lancaster services to pore over the Lake District guidebook.
It had rained during the week, so although Friday had been dry we thought the Rothay might run. We drove up to Pelter bridge where it was obviously too low, and we figured that everywhere else would be the same so headed back down to Waterhead for some lake-based paddling.
From Waterhead we paddled along the top edge of Windermere, and up the Rothay to the first weir where we played for quite a while, then back down, and up the Brathay to just upstream of the rapid at Clappersgate. Lunch and more playing there was followed by a paddle down the western side of Windermere to Low Wray campsite before a one-mile paddle straight across the lake (avoiding the steamers and gin palaces) back to Waterhead. All followed by a pleasant pint in the Wateredge pub, where Phil sneaked back in to add blackcurrant to his Guinness while he thought we weren't looking.
The upstream paddling was hard work, particularly on the Rothay, but despite this and the amount of flatwater paddling, this was another great club trip with a great bunch of people. Everyone had a good time surfing the wave on the Rothay, Carl & I were playing catch the breakout on the Brathay, and we had a slightly bizarre half hour on a flat bit of the Brathay doing some rolling while people took turns to throw Phil in the river. The weather was fantastic so even the long slog across Windermere was enjoyable (we told you not to buy a playboat, Mike!), especially for Dave who had hired a barge for the day.

I've seen one for sale that's used to be black with a hint of white on the top, but now look's more like pink. May leave that one for someone else... |
