Disaster!
The Cross Guns (across from the pool) closed last week, with steel shutters and signs stating "all items of value have been removed".
Since I don't like fighting I suggest that we don't head round the corner onto Market Street but instead the next nearest pub is the Howfener, further up Bolton Road towards the A6. This used to be a good boozer when it was the Rose & Crown but I'm not sure since it was done up a few years ago. It does have a big car park. The White Horse is just up from that but always seems to be full of flashing lights and noise when I go past (or I'm getting old).
My personal recommendation would be the Rose Hill Tavern (Holts' Brewery, therefore CHEAP), on Leigh Road near Daisy Hill station, mainly because it's near my house so I can dump my car and walk. It's on the way home for the Leigh / Atherton contingent but a little bit out of the way for the rest. If the Howfener turns out to be as crap as I suspect it might be the best bet.

Looks like the Cross Guns has re-opened this week (new, less miserable management I assume) so I don't know whether it's worth returning there in future?
Personally I wasn't impressed with the Howfener two weeks ago, what was it like last week? I'm biased because it used to be my local when it was a good pub.
