In 2006 I was awarded the lovely trophy below:

For several sensible reasons we abandoned the league and allowed people to confess to swims etc themselves.  In a few weeks time several club members will be attending a safety course where they will learn that the way Steve, Paul, Graham B and myself do rescues is wrong!  Some of our less experienced paddlers may have observed that the current response to a rescue situation is :

1) stop laughing
2) make sure camera is focused
3) possibly rescue paddler

To be serious we do carry out rescues in a sensible and speedy manner and only do the above to the most experienced.

Anyway, back to the point.  What are we going to do with the trophy?  Ideas please!

Carl

ps, found this press clipping which may be of interest to some members

If it's going to be awarded again, how about for one of the following,
Best freestyle exit from a kayak
Best use of competent   paddlers to get back in kayak
Most elaborate kayak rescue (Think Graham S would win this one)

The winner should have to attach the lovely trophy to their boat, hopefully this won't attract Trolls, Killer Clams or other such beasties

Which rescue are you talking about? Pinned on washburn, ending up on opposite bank to kayak at Llangollen, caught in the reeds on the canal, or one of my countless burrs swims???

The one where you were stood on the bank, arms crossed while an army of paddlers tried to un-wedge your boat

Other clubs have worthy stuff like most improved novice or awards for service to the club. I’m not sure that fits in with our general attitude/culture so it has to be something like:

• Most embarrassing injury
• Most memorable quote
• Best excuse for a swim
• Longest swim

etc …… (we need more trophies)

So it could just be awarded for any really memorable event/quote/thing which has happened during the year which really should not go unmarked. An annual vote amongst the membership would make sure that the ritual humiliation was conducted in a fair and democratic manner. If we have a Christmas do as suggested elsewhere then it could be awarded then to maximise the embarrassment.

I therefore propose:

The Westhoughton Canoe Club annual award for a random but quite funny, embarrassing or memorable event

Not very catchy, but if you can have Oscars and Emmys we could think of something.

Keeping to 2009 only, a quick sweep through the forum brings up quite a few nominations even though it's only September:

• My rather stupid swim at Burrs in January after getting mixed up with some trees chasing Phil’s boat

• My swim after trying to flat spin without a paddle at Burrs

• Carl’s quote before the Ure run “this club needs some competent paddlers”

• Graham’s boat seal launching into the Dee without him at JJ’s.

• Mel’s moonwalk (I missed this – will it be reprised on the Anglesey weekend?)

• Carl falling into the canal while getting out in May

• Graham’s Tarzan swing at JJ’s

• Lisa’s head-to-toe mudbath at JJ’s

• Phil’s technicolour drinking habits

• My broken paddle on a swollen Burrs

• Carl’s deep water rescue attempt on the Ure (with Mel’s assistance but sabotaged by clams)

• Whatever happened on the Brathay between Phil, Darren & Carl which ended up with Carl stood motionless in the river holding his boat.

Plus lots more which I either can't think of wasn't there for (I'm sure there must be more from the Ure weekend) so put your own nominations down here for an end-of-year vote. Don't be shy - you can always nominate yourself.

Unfortunately Grahams's pinning of the H3 on the Washburn (when we stopped the river for half an hour while we rigged a pulley then dumped Chris in the main flow) was in 2008.

Don't forget to add them as they happen - the next couple of weekends should provide some good material.

It should be noted that getting lots of nominations doesn't (necessarily) mean anything other than you get out paddling a lot!.

I feel we are now at the stage when we can start to make this a little more formal, so I would like to suggest that the trophy is awarded at the Christmas meal.

We need to decide on a name for the trophy and also who should be given it.  I therefore ask that members send me suggested names for the award and nominations.  When a few have been collected I will open up a new subject in this part of the forum and we can start voting for the name and winner.

I would like to say that no one should be allowed to hold the trophy for two consecutive occasions, but since I tend to sometimes open my mouth before engaging my brain I will take any nominations for myself on the chin and ensure an even playing field.

* this quote was not really intended as stated, I meant that we need more people who are able to lead river trips.

I would like to nominate myself for the Award for Random Sensational Event.

For those members who are unaware, I suffered a serious back injury at the end of August caused by walking across the road. I  had my first ride in an ambulance for a long time and was rushed into Penrith hospital where I was diagnosed as having a prolapsed (slipped) disc.

The end result is that I have been off work for 5 weeks to date and advised to pack in canoeing apart from the odd event in warmer weather.

PS - My only other ride in an ambulance followed a high level ranking slalom event on the River Tryweryn graveyard  over 20 years ago when I decided that looking at the river bottom whilst negotiating a tricky series of slalom gates was the best way to determine the river depth - I broke two fingers and gashed my face in several places. I belive there is a photo of me on the club gallery of those silly days!

Ignore this Phil, this was twenty years ago and this is probably not the same Tryweryn or Graveyard where we did our throwline rescues, besides the reason why Graham broke two fingers was that he was signaling to the officials.
