Again, a bit of advance planning; this is unlike us but never mind.
Last week we paddled across Windermere and landed at Low Wray campsite, which got me thinking (not a common event while I’m paddling). While you can’t generally book in advance here they do have a group field which can be booked by groups, clubs etc. I suggested the idea of a camping weekend here next summer, and a few people seemed keen on the idea.
We could make a big social event out of this, inviting partners, kids, friends, family etc. We could take all the club boats and probably rubber dinghies and anything else that floats and have a general muck about on the water (a bit like I missed out on at Sleningford on the Sunday!). We could even paddle across the lake for Technicolour Guinness and ice cream.
I have two brothers with kids and I know they'd be up for it. If I had any friends they might have been interested as well.
I’d guess that the field books up early so I’ll start to make some tentative enquires if there is enough interest. Who would want to come? Who would you bring with you? Is the end of June suitable? (For selfish personal reasons I suggest that as it’s before the main holiday season but after Amy’s GCSEs).
You don’t need telling to post here with your ideas.
Steve

Outstanding idea, any ideas as to dates? If I can make it then put me down for one tent of 4, and maybe a few others............see if any of my siblings are interested.

This has gone quiet as I haven't had a useful reply from the NT yet. They have my numbers and have been promising to ring me back for the last six weeks but the best I have had is:
| Quote: | Hi Steven
many apologies for the delay in replying, we have been incredibly busy with a new booking system over august and have had to prioritise enquiries for august and September. I will be in touch as soon as I can. In the mean time here are some basic details about group bookings and details we would need. If you could drop me an email with details I will ring you as soon as I am able. Once again apologies for the delay
Kind regards
Claire Green
GROUP BOOKINGS
Our Group Booking system is there for organised groups such as Scouts, School Groups and Clubs/Societies.
Group bookings are made on the basis of signed agreement with the group leader. The leader is responsible and accountable for the group, for booking and arrival arrangements, payment of all fees, tent spacing, safety, and conduct on site.
If you wish to make a booking please e-mail us with the details of the group you’re looking to bring. The details we’re looking for are as follows:
The dates you’re looking to stay with us
The number of tents and the size of the tents
The number of people i.e. adults and children
The number of vehicles
Any specific requirements you may need i.e. lakeshore access, specific camping areas
Once we have received this information we will then check on availability and get back to as soon as possible. |
They have the information they need so watch this space. I know this seems a long way off but I would guess that they book up the group field early. I have rung a couple of other lakeside campsites, and they would be prepared to take a large group, but I thought Low Wray would be good as they have a dedicated field we could have to ourselves.
Graham - they don't take tin tents at Low Wray but if we end up somewhere else then it should be OK.

I spoke to the NT yesterday. We would be OK for the weekend of 26/27 June, but would need to confirm numbers and get them a deposit in good time actually to get booked in.
However, they have a number of group fields and the one with direct lake access can only take about four tents. There is a field which can accommodate up to about twelve tents, this is only a short distance from the lake but obviously we wouldn’t have our own bit of lakeshore to muck about on.
I don’t know what anyone else thinks but I will make some further enquiries about commercial campsites on Coniston and Ullswater as they could probably segregate an area for us, and could also take caravans.
Thoughts?
