The idea of staying at the Sleningford Campsite was something we had talked about when doing this trip in previous years.
A large number of club members took part camping over or coming for the Saturday. The water level was very low, (even below the gauge) and we spent a great deal of time shuffling our boats (good stomach exercise?). The level meant that Hack Falls was more technical than normal, although obviously not as fast flowing.
We met three fishermen, one passed the time of day with us, one just sat on the bank and waited whilst we paddled past and the third (who was stood in the water) simply asked that we paddle behind him, there was none of the unpleasantness that you sometimes hear about and this is how it should be. We did get challenged by a Water Bailiff who said that whilst there is an access agreement in force, we are only allowed to get on the river at certain points and we should not stop and play, however, he was pleasant enough and we got on our way.
The weirs were nothing to write home about and whilst Tanfield has claimed lives in the past it had a very low flow over it, however, we played safe and went river right. It was interesting to see how deep this weir is and hence why it is dangerous*. We continued down to the campsite and ran the last part.
On the Sunday we did some flatwater work and then everyone went down the final drop. We ended the day by running the campsite section from more or less the top. This was a really good family weekend and hopefully one of more to come.

I'm not happy about what the "water bailiff" said to us as I've found conflicting information on the web about what the access restrictions are. (I don't credit them with the term "agreement" as they are usually a one-sided list of dates when the worm-danglers allow the common hordes access to "their" river). I think we may have failed to doff our caps sufficiently.
I intend to try to find out more, and will report back.
(It was however, a great day out and I was a bit jealous of you lot staying all weekend. A more light-hearted post will follow, with pictures, tonight.)

I had a fantastic weekend. The only scarey bit was when i saw the hanging rabbits from the tree. Never mind the fact that i came out at Hack Falls, that was COOL. Loved It.
I have also found a new like, Camping!!!
Cant wait to go camping again.
Im looking at going camping with my sister at the end of the month if she will come with me.
I have to say that i went down the last rapid backwards. I saw Carl go down backwards and i wanted a little challange. it was great. And i also did my roll at the bottom where we had a flat water paddle.
So i can now say that i have done my roll in the River Ure.

I just take it in my stride,
Not only have I seal launched the weir of death, I have also surfed the waves on it.
Surely I should get a medal or a badge at least. |

I want to thank Mel, Jon, Dave, Graham and Carl the clam man for helping me on Sunday as my confidence was low to say the least, they all helped me in a big way and really stuck with me on the bottom rapid, they are a credit to the club
Also another thanks to Jon and Graham for lending me your boats
I think my swim i had there has helped me to because it was only my second one and it wasnt bad at all.
Thank you all for a great weekend and making me wake up every morning with a thumping headache.
Ps Thanks Mel for the Moonwalk lesson (Brilliant)

No worries Phil. Stick with it - it does get easier (or you develop a taste for swimming!)
Thanks to everyone who came - great weekend had it all - killer clams, trees of certain doom and the evil weir of mild peril. Enjoyed hack falls more this than last year, but will be hoping for less of a shuffle next time!
Hope we can sort out another weekend before summer is out (may leave the grouse at home next time though) |
