Tonight the river was the highest any of us except Graham & Chris had ever seen it:

Only Chris H, Bruce W and I were daft enough to try and paddle the smelly water:

It was just an incredibly quick run down, no stopping and playing (none of us liked the colour or the smell), with no swims or major mishaps, although as always the river takes its sacrifice and I'll have to be off to Brookbank this weekend:

A bit mad, but a top paddle.
(Thanks to Adam for taking some of these pictures, and to Darren for lending me his paddle to finish off the run!)

Steve

What happened to your paddle Steve? Was it the trolls or killer clams?

I think it was the killer clam/troll hybrids which have mutated in the polluted soup that was the Irwell last night. Or a rock. I had to learn some C1 paddling techniques quick last night as it was only just above the two bridges when I broke it.

Although it was a fairly inexpensive, mid-range paddle it has stood up to a lot (I think I've had about 4 - 5 years out of it) and I was gutted to find that I can't buy another paddle the same any more. So a nice man at Lendal is getting a spare blade to me via Robin Hood (the shop, not the outlaw). So long as I can keep buying new blades and shafts it should last me as long as Trigger's broom.

It would be more sickening if I'd broke the neck on some £300 Werners so I think I'll stick with these for a while, I can't see any need to upgrade just yet.

Look at the ukriversguidebook as shown below for some images of when the river was really high!

Nice pics Darren, and a scary bit of video! (We didn't do that bit). I have subscribed to your YouTube channel so I'll be looking out for more.

I seem to be sharing the wave with a fag packet or Coke can in one of those pictures, which kind of sums up the whole night.
